Authorware Program
This project is for an Authorware program for a computer based training science lesson. An Authorware program is used to create an interactive engaging medium for educational instruction. This project involved the creation of an Authorware program called Dr. Laboratorian’s LabQuest. In this program, a science lab character, Dr. L, guides the students, who are his lab assistants, through the lab. Students travel through different rooms in the labs in which they learn about lab equipment and lab safety, participate in a final challenge, and discover a glossary of terms.
In order to design this project, many steps were involved. The first step was to design the overall layout and concept of the program. This involved designing screen shots, color schemes, main menu screen, and navigation. Digital pictures and video were incorporated into this project to make it more realistic for the students. The final challenge included assessment questions that showed the knowledge of the students.
When designing this program, I gained skilled in Authorware. The duties were split among the members of the group in this project. We split the design process by giving each person different rooms in the lab to work on. I worked on the final challenge room in which I created multiple-choice questions and drag and drop questions for the program. I also helped in created the overall concept and programming in the other rooms.
While doing this project, I learned that planning is important to any educational program. The concept, games, and lessons in the project have to align to the objectives and goals of the program. The problem that I encountered with this project was the effect of the videos on the loading time of the program. With the videos, the CBT became very slow to load. This has taught me that it is better to use static graphics rather than dynamic graphics such as videos in the program.
